8 Days Mount Kenya Technical Climbing – Normal Route
Day 1: Nairobi – Nanyuki – Old Moses Camp
Depart Nairobi at seven o’clock and drive to Nanyuki town arriving in time for lunch. As you have lunch the cook will be shopping for your food for the next four days. After lunch proceed to Sirimon park gate and after formalities start trekking following the track as it winds uphill though the forest which becomes heather land after about three hours arriving Oldmoses Camp for dinner and overnight.
2650 – 3300m, 3-4 hours hiking time, 9km, 750m ascent
Day 2: Old Moses – Shipton Camp
Todays hike will take about six to seven hours crossing Liki and Mackinders valleys, there is a great view of Tereri and Sendeo peaks. And also a great view of Nanyuki town and beautiful terrain. Shipton’s camp has also an excellent setting with the north faces of Nelion peak and Batian peak visible from the camp.
3300m – 4200m, 6-7 hours, 14km, 900m ascent
Day 3: Shipton Camp – Mackinders Camp
After breakfast begin the days hike following the trail that leads to Kami camp below the north face of Batian. Continuing west – southwest the trails climbs up switchbacks in the fine snow before reaching Hausberg Col at 4590m. We will descend into the upper Hausberg valley and rest at the oblong and Hausberg tarns. Ascending to the crest of a ridge known as Arthur’s seat we see the trail winding along a beautiful series of rock ledges. We will descend to Mackinder’s camp for the night.
4,200m – 4,300m
Day 4: Mackinders Camp – Point Lenana – Shipton Camp
Wake up very early at 2:30am and have a light breakfast; coffee or tea with some bicuits, depart camp with the aim of summiting point lenana. Hike up a steep stony scree that cuts through a cliff clearing visible part towards lower Hall Tarns arriving point Lenana 4985m at 6:30am, the hike takes about three hours. After the sunrise, descend down to Shipton camp for meals and much needed rest.
4200m – 4985m – 2950m, 10-11 hours, 32km, 785m ascent
Day 5: Shipton Camp
We spend the day acclimatizing. Climb a short route on either Point Peter or Point Dutton in redyness to climbing to Batian the following morning. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 6: Shipton Camp- Batian Peak – Shipton Camp
We begin our days hike early morning at five am via the North Face Standard Route, you may climb the first couple of pitches by headlamp. The route initially follows a wide couloir which you ascend for some 7 pitches, never harder than 5.7. You’ll then descend via the same route hopefully hitting Shipton’s Camp before evening dusk for dinner and overnight.
3300m – 5199m – 3300m
Day 7: Shipton Camp – Chogoria Bandas
After breakfast begin the days hike following the Scenic Chogoria Route. Climb up to Simba Col then descent to the halls Tarns. From here we follow the backbone of a ridge, overlooking the spectacular Gorges Valley. Loosing elevation fast you leave the high moorlands and enter into the forest belt that surrounds Mount Kenya arriving mount kenya bandas for dinner and over night.
3300m – 2950m
Day 8: Mount Meru Bandas – Chogoria Town – Nairobi
After breakfast, descend down for two hours to forest clearance to catch a 4×4 transfer vehicle to Chogoria Village, early lunch and then transfer back to Nairobi where your Mount Kenya technical climbing adventure ends.
