5 Days Mount Kenya Hike Chogoria / Naromoru Route
Day 1: Nairobi – Mount Meru Bandas
Depart Nairobi at seven o’clock and drive to Chogoria town arriving in time for lunch. As you have lunch the cook will be shopping for your food for the next five days. After lunch, take a 4×4 vehicle accompanied by your porters, cook and Guide and drive for about 3 hours to where the forest clears. Begin your days hike from this point, the track can some time be very muddy as you make your way to Mount Meru Bandas covering a distance of ten kilometers. You will walk for 10km through the forest along the dirt and sometimes very muddy road for 3hrs to reach Mount Meru Bandas at 2950m. Evening is spent looking for animals which usually come to drink water befor the sun sets. Dinner and overnight at Mount Meru Bandas.
3 hours, 10km, 700m ascent
Day 2: Mount Meru Bandas – Road Head Camp
After breakfast begin the days hike through the giant heather and forest up to Chogoria road. The path drops to cross a stream then follows the broad ridge to the east of the gorges valley to reach Road Head Camp. The hike takes about 3-4 hours. After lunch visit the Nithi water fall and later resume to the camp for dinner and Overnight.
3 hours, 8km, 350m ascent
Day 3: Road Head – Mintos Hut
After breakfast hike through the Gorges Valley which is a major feature on the Chogoria Route. Hot lunch will be served half way by our cook. Later proceed to Mintos camp arriving late afternoon. After resting for about two hours visit the amazing (Temple) View point which is a large overhanging buttress overlooking Lake Michaelson, close to Hall Tarns. The views of the peaks, Lake Michaelson, The Temple, and across the valley to Delamere and Macmillan Peaks. Hall Tarns are situated right on the path and above The Temple, which is a 300 m (1,000 ft) cliff above Lake Michaelson. Dinner and overnight at Mintos Hut.
4- 5 hours, 13km
Day 4: Mintos – Point Lenana – Met Station
Wake up very early at 2:00am and have a light breakfast; coffee or tea with some bicuits, depart camp with the aim of summiting point lenana. Hike towards the main peaks after an hour, The path splits, heading west to Simba Col, and south west to Square Tarn. These are both on the Peak Circuit Route. The head of the valley known as temple fields, arriving at point Lenana 4985m just as the sun rises. After taking photographs, descend to Mackinders for full breakfast and later descend down to Met Station for dinner and overnight.
9- 10 hours, 23km, 785m ascent
Day 5: Met Station – Naromoru – Nairobi
After breakfast, descend down through the rainforest to Naromoru park gate; after formalities transfer back to Nairobi where your Mount Kenya hike ends; lunch en route arriving in the afternoon.
